Was just there a couple of weeks ago. Didn't rent a car, but things look pretty easy to navigate including up to Todos Santos. Did the walking tour in San Jose as well as the Thursday Art Walk downtown...both were very worthwhile. A walk along the estuary is quite nice...lots of birds. Also booked a whale watching tour thru our hotel and it was excellent...lots of whales right now.

The water is more rough here than other areas of Mexico. If you plan to snorkel etc I’d suggest another part of Mexico.
Vella
Ninu Agreed. The waters are not safe to swim in even for an experienced swimmer.
Kathy
Yea when we were there we didn't venture into the water, looked pretty rough for either snorkelling or swimming. Pools are much safer for swim
Leigh-An
Depends on where you want to get into the water. Have never had an issue. Keep in mind, the moon phase impacts the surf. Full moon = higher surf = a great day for watching the surfers.

Went to Hacienda Encantada in March and can’t say enough good things about the service, food and amenities. We rented a car for a day from the resort and drive to Todos Santos, which we loved, and La Paz, which I would say skip. Our hotel had a shuttle which went several times a day to their sister resort in Cabo SAN Lucas on the marina, but not Santos, which I wish we would have gone to see as I hear it is beautiful.

Cruised around here at Christmas time; drove to Los Barriles (Lazy Daze Beach Bar is worth a stop) and Todos Santos. Everything was great and safe. They say not to drive after dark, so plan accordingly. The Santa Maria beach was safe to swim and is snorkel worthy. The only time I felt ripped off was buying fuel! watch what they put in and at what price.
Stacey
love Los Barriles, my parents live there so we visit often.
Kathy
This is where we stayed. It was great, over all. Tell them up front you don't want a timeshare pitch. They were discreet and didn't push, just put a note under our door about it. Also they were very accommodating when we requested a room on the other side of the hotel which is the quiet side, which overlooks the parking area but we didn't care) https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g152515-d153086...

There’s an art walk on Thursday nights, and a beautiful organic market on saturdays
Elaine
We rented a car in Nov. There for 10 days and put on 1000 km. Felt safe driving around. Up up as far as La Paz.
Annette
Love Cabo region and have vacationed there many times. You can trust public transporation to allow visiting along the tourist routes.
Olga
Every Thursday there is a market in San Jose. You might want to visit a gallery of Frank Arnold. He actually opens his house and mingles with people while they enjoy his works. Very interesting place! We were there before Christmas.
Olga
We used public transit with no safety issues
Carol-Ly
We rented a car right from our resort and went back and forth all week. The rental was pretty cheap and we had absolutely no problem driving.
Kate
These responses are all very very helpful-- thank you!!!
Aleksand
In my opinion Todos Santos is a waste of time. Also if you want decent Mexican food ask a taxi driver where he eats.
Kaleigh
Its really safe and easy to rent a car and drive. You can snorkel at Chileno Bay, Santa Maria and swim safely at Medano Beach. The hotels on the pacific side do not have swimming beach but near Medano beach is good. Also uber is available now in Cabo as an option to go to san jose for the art market thrusday evenings.
Tanya
I can give you resort recommendations! We stayed at riu baja California last year, new adults only. Great resort! Loved cabo
Margot
Just got back from Los Cabos 2 days ago and stayed at this same resort. I definitely it is a wonderful resort...clean, friendly, everything is conveniently located. The only down side was not being able to go in the ocean. We felt very safe there, Walmart is basically across the road. We walked there 1 day and had no issues. I am even considering a retirement home there!
Tanya
Agreed, Margot! Did you go down the beach towards the marina for a massage? We did on our last day and discovered the beach there quite swimable! Had we known, we'd have gone there more... and had more massages
Cheryl
Tanya Rui Santa Fe is right beside the palace for less money. It is much more fun!
Tanya
Cheryl Howie Rallison we walked through the property there but really enjoyed the adults only aspect of the Riu BC. We also got a smokin' deal last year as we were there just a few weeks after it opened.
Allyssa
We stayed at the Royal Decameron. Adult only nice and small great food at the a la cart restaurant. We took public transit into Cabo as well as San Jose and actually walked back to the resort from San Jose along the resort road! They have an out door market there on thursdays. We were there a different day and there was still smaller stuff going on in the square and lots of cool shops and restaurants to go around to
Erin
Watch out for random speed bumps in the middle of the highway. I also suggest renting a truck or SUV, some of the roads, beach accesses, and parking lots in the small towns are rough. I saw some people with little economy rental cars that could barely make it in or out of some places without getting stuck or high centered.
Tammy
We are goin in March been there 6 times we stay in San Jose less congestion lots of restaurants and you can walk into town and take the bus into Cabo San Lucas
Todos santos is a great excursion
We also love goin on the dinner cruise caborey
Cristina
I love Cabo been three times. Snorkel for free on the calmest water at Santa Maria Bay & Public Beach. You can drive or take a bus there. Take your own snorkels.
Terra
We always rent through Cactus. Great experience with them. Driving around is easy. We found San Jose much more quiet and sleepy than Cabo. Depends what you want.

We're considering a trip to Los Cabos, Mexico (San Jose del Cabo). Will just be two adults and would probably do an all-inclusive resort, but would want to see the town of San Jose del Cabo and maybe get out to the town of Todos Santos. Has anyone traveled here recently? Wondering about:
--safety/practicality of driving a rental vehicle ourselves,
--"must see" (or avoid!) things in San Jose and Todos Santos,
--any tips for travel in this part of Mexico
Thanks!!
