We rented in Ireland a few years ago. We tried to deny optional insurance as already have it. They wanted to charge more to deny than insurance cost. Lots of roads are “narrow” and curvy.

Thank you Sharon. It may make more sense to rent in Canada before going Ireland.

We’re going next month. I rented thu enterprise. Make sure you bring a letter from you CC company saying they will cover your damages and collision as the rental company WILL ask for it. Then decline the CDW at the rental booth.
Also 3rd part liability is covered by the rental company as it’s the law they have to supply it no extra cost .

Ken I wonder if it’s at no extra cost in Spain too?

I dunno. In UK and Ireland it 3rd party is as it’s the law.

Lidija if you book thru autoeurope it says right on your quote that liability is included and they welcome credit cards that offer collision instead of being pressured to buy it from them.

We rented a car in spring there with Dan Dooley. I highly recommend them. Booked it from here. While researching my trip I read so many horrible experiences about car rental in Ireland and this was the only company who had consistent good reviews. Just check trip advisor forum/ Car rental in Ireland. And bring a letter from your credit card company saying you have insurance for car rental. Leaving Dublin airport we saw multiple accidents at the first couple roundabouts involving tourist who just picked there car up at rental agency...

Not all regular credit cards have CDW - most likely it’s only if you have a “travel” credit card will have the coverage.

We rented from Dan Dooley near Belfast airport a few years ago and had a great experience. We were surprised to learn that our cc specifically excluded Ireland and a few other countries - so call to check that Ireland is covered if you will be relying on your cc for insurance. If you are going to Northern Ireland, I would recommend renting from Dan Dooley there as it is less expensive than the south and there is no deductible. We did Dublin and Belfast with public transit before renting. Enjoy Ireland!!!

I booked a rental online in May with Budget before arriving in Dublin. They gave me the option to decline the CDW at the counter which I did because I had the coverage on my credit card and they didn't bother asking about any letter from my credit card company (i did have a pdf copy on my phone in case). I had a good experience with Budget and I think I paid about $120 CAD for 3 days. Gas was about $1.50 Euro/L.

Thank you Alvin. As a Canadian, do we need an international license?

From what I've read it doesn't appear that you need the International Driving Permit and that your normal license is good for 12 months. I just happened to have an IDP from a trip 6 months earlier so I took that with me just in case.

Car Rental Tips for Ireland

Ireland is a beautiful country to explore by car, but it's important to do your research before you book a rental. Here are a few tips to help you find the best car rental for your needs:

  1. Book early. Especially if you're traveling during peak season (April-October), it's important to book your car rental well in advance. This will give you the best selection of cars and the lowest prices.
  2. Compare prices from multiple companies. There are a number of different car rental companies operating in Ireland, so it's worth comparing prices before you book. You can use a comparison website like Kayak or Expedia to get quotes from multiple companies at once.
  3. Read the reviews. Before you book a car rental, be sure to read the reviews from other customers. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from the company and the car you're renting.
  4. Choose the right car for your needs. If you're planning on doing a lot of driving, you'll want to choose a car that's comfortable and fuel-efficient. If you're only planning on driving in the cities, you can get away with a smaller car.
  5. Be aware of the insurance requirements. In Ireland, you are required to have third-party insurance when you rent a car. This insurance will cover you in the event of an accident, but it may not cover you for other things, like damage to the car or theft. It's important to read the terms and conditions of your insurance policy carefully before you book your car rental.

Here are a few of my own personal experiences with renting cars in Ireland:

  • I have always had good experiences with Hertz. They have a wide selection of cars to choose from, and their prices are reasonable. I have also found their customer service to be excellent.
  • I have also rented cars from Europcar and Avis. I have found their prices to be a bit higher than Hertz, but their customer service has also been good.
  • I have never had a bad experience with any of the major car rental companies in Ireland. However, I have heard some complaints about smaller, local companies. If you're considering renting a car from a smaller company, be sure to read the reviews before you book.

Overall, I have found renting a car in Ireland to be a positive experience. The prices are reasonable, the selection of cars is wide, and the customer service is good. If you're planning on exploring Ireland by car, I encourage you to do your research and book your rental early.
