We are in need of an urgent passport and from what info we gathered and went through...
If you require a passport/renewal for travel after 30 days it’s basically mail in service
If you require one sooner than you must call, they than based on your circumstances will decide and they make a request for an in person appointment. Has to be urgent and requires proof for in person appointments.
Our request for 2 day urgent was approved (had to show a death certificate in our case) but the earliest appointment was after 6 days.
Calgary has quicker time’s we were told as we booked for Edmonton

How long are mail in applications taking for most?

Profile picture of Jessica

Jessica

Meraj I just did mine in August and it took about 2.5 weeks from the date I mailed it. (I live in BC now so from Calgary it could be quicker)

Jessica Was a regular renewal for non essential travel or ?

Profile picture of Jessica

Jessica

Maureen Hi Maureen, it was just a routine passport renewal. I had/have no travel plans - I just didn't want it to expire!

Maureen

Jessica Perfect! I had a feeling that was the case. Thanks!!

Jessica

Maureen no problem! Just be wary that now that it's getting closer to the holidays, that the mail delivery times may be longer.

Maureen

Jessica Yeah I’m good till Feb 2022 so I should be ok...it just depends on when I can get out of here later next year as the places I’m visiting need extra time on my passport beyond my return date.

Jessica

Maureen oh gotcha! Yeah you've got tons of time lol.

Maureen you can't get a renewal until your passport is at 12 months from expiry

Maureen your expiry is too far out to warrant a new passport.

Trudy Lynn I know that, but just curious to know what is going on at this point.

They will not issue a passport unless it is an emergency with proof until under 30 days before travel and then with proof of a travel itinerary. Trying to get passports for Christmas and couldn't get an appointment before the 23rd of this month.

Bev where is your appointment. Mine is in Edmonton which seems ridiculous.

From what I know they are not issuing renewals if it’s not an emergency. We had to give them proof that we where going to a treatment centre in Mexico and had to pay extra to get it back sooner.

Maureen it is, but by appt only. Unless you have a good reason they expect all passport applications to be via mail..or so it seems.

Unless you have booked travel you can still mail in your application if your passport expires in less than 12 months

We sent our daughters in 2.5 (end of Oct) weeks ago. It’s a new one and still waiting.

Mailed my daughter’s in (hers was expired) at the beginning of September and got it back in about 5 weeks.
If you want to go in person you have to call in and they book you an appt. but you have to have proof of travel in the next two months is what I was told.

Did anyone have delays with getting their supporting documents back? I got my new passport in the mail pretty quickly, but no supporting documents back yet (ie. marriage and birth certificate). They are originals, so it’s a little concerning. Are they sent later or is this cause for concern?

FYI, they gave me this number to contact because they needed some clarification on some of my information as I'm not born here. Seems the most direct way to get to them.

Mallory

Meraj thank you, I will get in touch with them

Profile picture of Maureen

Mallory I find it so concerning to have to mail these kind of doc’s through the mail. Did you send them registered and would they not have to send your documents back that way too you would think. They should be trackable.

Profile picture of Mallory

Mallory

Maureen yes I sent them tracked on the way there but after that you don’t hear anything! I agree concerning and a little stressful

Profile picture of Maureen

Maureen

Mallory Yeah, I would def try to call them, with these types of Documents they should have to send them trackable, but who knows with the gov’t. Good luck I sure hope you get them back.

Mallory I had the same issue with my baby’s passport. I got the passport back but haven’t gotten the original birth certificate back yet. When I phoned they told me that because of Covid, they are doing processing and printing at separate locations so I would receive them separately. Still waiting but I imagine things are a bit slow around the holidays.
