It will likely be cool to swim in April. The beach in Positano is very rocky, and the town is quite steep so you'll be going up and down hill quite a bit. It is beautiful and I love it, but you might have more options in Sorrento with a three-year-old. We stayed in a lovely airbnb just out of town if you want the info, but you would need to take the local bus to get to Positano. Not a big deal as April will be less busy.

Positano vs Sorrento: Which is Better for a Family Trip in Mid April?
If you are planning a family trip to Italy in mid April and are debating between staying in Positano or Sorrento, there are a few factors to consider.
One of the main concerns you have is whether the sea will be nice enough for your 3 year old to enjoy a dip. In mid April, the weather in both Positano and Sorrento can be quite pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the sea temperature may still be a bit chilly for swimming, especially for young children.
Positano is known for its stunning cliffside views and picturesque beaches, but the town itself is quite hilly and may not be the most stroller-friendly. Sorrento, on the other hand, is a larger town with more amenities and activities for families, such as parks and playgrounds.
Ultimately, the decision between Positano and Sorrento will come down to your family's preferences and priorities. If you are looking for a more relaxed and scenic beach town, Positano may be the better choice. However, if you want a more family-friendly environment with easier access to amenities, Sorrento might be the way to go.
Both towns have their own unique charm and attractions, so you really can't go wrong with either choice. Just be prepared for the possibility that the sea may still be too cold for swimming in mid April.
Whichever town you decide to stay in, be sure to make the most of your time in Italy and enjoy all the wonderful experiences the Amalfi Coast has to offer!
