Does anyone have any information on where would be somewhere nice to go? I was thinking Europe but then was told exchange is massively expensive as well, I'm thinking tropical maybe? Looking to try to keep is cheaper but nice !

i have not looked the last couple of weeks - but exchange for Europe was noted as being very good - still expensive, but better exchange than normal. If you are looking for warm and reasonable - we have typically found mexico and dominican pretty reasonable - depending on time of year you are looking at.

We are looking at probably September - December kinda thing
And 1$ Canadian is 0.66 euro so still not great

Profile picture of Kari

Kari

That is actually not bad for the Euro.

That's a good exchange rate, the euro has sat within 10 cents or so of that range for over a year now. The euro is your best bet for major currency, and many places in Europe are incredibly cheap even after the exchange rate.

I just did a month of traveling in Europe Sept & Oct. Euro was .53 @ that time and the pound was 1.06 so double. The way I looked at things was.... Is that item that's 10 pounds$ worth $20.00 Canadian and can I buy that at home cheaper, or can I even get that at home. It definitely is NOT cheap! But I made my dreams come true so it was worth it.

That's the thing I really want to go everywhere I have since I was a child so picking some seems highly unlikely

Croatia is beautiful and quite inexpensive.

If you can get the klm flash sale to Zagreb, the flight will be under $1000 but otherwise getting there is pricey

You can get reasonable flights out of Calgary on condor to Frankfurt then it's quite inexpensive to go from there to Split. If you keep an eye out for deals you can go for about $1200 even in the peak season. Unfortunately not so many great deals from Edmonton.

Europe is the way to go. I was there recently for 6 weeks. Try Mallorca or Ibiza or the Amalfi Coast or Portugal (the Algarve) Its worth it and considering the exchange is not much more to the american dollar you wont regret it.

Tanis-Le

We were thinking Italy Spain and France

Profile picture of Flora

Flora

Italy is expensive. For reference a bottle of water will cost 1.5-2euro and a coffee 3euro. An average dinner out with alcohol is 50-60euro for two. France is about the same. Spain is the cheapest of the three. Our dollar will go ALOT further in Asia if you are on a limited budget.

Profile picture of Tanis-Le

Tanis-Le

Asia flights are extremely expensive unless there are
All inclusive with a travel agency o am no good at this booking travel thing lol.

Profile picture of Flora

Flora

All inclusives are not common in Asia. Most people go to Chapters and buy a lonely planet book and plan their own itinerary. If you prefer all inclusive, stick with Mexico, the Dominican, Cuba, or maybe even do a western Caribbean cruise out of Florida.

Profile picture of Tanis-Le

Tanis-Le

Only reason we preferred all inclusive was to try to get everything in one cost

Profile picture of Kerry

Kerry

That's what they take advantage of when they book packages. It's cheaper to do it yourself. No one works for free, so you're paying someone to put the package together.

Profile picture of Tanis-Le

Tanis-Le

Hmm that does make sense, I am just honestly afraid I'd screw up lol!

You'll be fine! Tripadvisor.ca is an awesome resource for choosing hotels. They have never steered me wrong. I usually book my flights on www.flighthub.com - they are always the cheapest (just beware the change fees are high). It is scary to do it yourself, but we have so many resources now. Just pick a single location if you're new - choose your flights and a hotel. This site is also a good place to get advice.

I just searched one of the places I wanted to through flight hub and your right holynhannah their flights are cheaper

Profile picture of Tanis-Le

Tanis-Le

Why are change fees?

Profile picture of Kerry

Kerry

i don't know why, but they charge a lot if you have to change your flights. I have never changed flights, so I don't worry about it but others have pointed out their policy for this. I never find any other site with flights as low as flighthub. I've booked multiple flights with them, including a trip to Japan and Thailand, and never had a problem.

Right now I am not looking budget wise ( will be saving until a couple months prior to leaving, but looking to go for 7-14 days somewhere and looking for August 29 forward as departure dates

Maldives will easily run you 8-11k for 2 people for 2 wks, and it won't even be a waterbungalow. Go to Turkey, their Lira is hurting as well, and stuff is affordable there.

Europe is very doable on a budget. Even the UK. It is all about where you spend you money. I stay in .hostels, universities and B&Bs. You can buy a railpass in Canada. If you know you are going to be on the train a fair amount it is cheaper. Tou can save accommodation one night if you do a over night train trip. The megabus is also very cheap to travel. You can get a cheap flight into London and the take a ryan air flight to lots of places. If you watch ryan air you can get a flight whwre basically you are only paying for your luggage. 5 years ago i got a flight from glasgow to Dublin for 20$ CAD and from Belfast to London for 40$CAD. Hostelbookers is good for accommodations as well as booking.com. i tend to budget in a few m nice meals out and pack lunches and have easy breakfast. A trip to the market makes for cheap meals. My last UK trip i only spent 2000CAD for 2 weeks. And the Pounds was aboubt double then.
