Hawaiian Tropics should be reef safe. We bought ours in Hawaii when we were there.

Jill it’s got to say it. Just buying it in Hawaii isn’t a guarantee.

Rocky Mountain Soap Co sells one which we like
Natasha
We use the Rocky Mountain Soap Co sunscreen. All natural and has a light tint so you don't end up looking white when you've rubbed it in
Karen
Purchase Reef Safe if you can.

There are many drug store sunscreens now that do not contain oxybenzone. But you have to read every label. For example, I have found some in the Ombrelle Kid's line that are oxybenzone free but others aren't.
Kath
I ordered reef safe via amazon -> oxybenzone free
Tamara
We were just in mexico and they said that all the sunscreen bleaches the coral and kill it. Now they are suggesting you buy rash gaurds with the uv protection in it
Jessica
I believe the island of Maui or any of the Hawaiian island have information on reef safe sun protection.

Some will actually say “reef safe” on them. My fav is ThinkBaby
Lisa
the sad part is stuff that’s advertised as “reef safe” 80% of the time isn’t reef safe. Only sunscreen that is titanium dioxide or zinc oxide are actually safe. In addition, because your skin absorbs cream and it’s chemicals into your bloodstream (within 26s)...typical sunscreens aren’t really safe for you either. I’ll stop my granola girl rant but this is something I’m passionate about as no one is calling out those on false advertising
Gemma
A better option is rashguards at peak sun hours
Trish
Check at health food stores.

We bought ours in Mexico so that we’d make sure it was the right one. But I don’t remember the name.

The snorkelling or dive shops will have and can recommend ocean/ocean life friendly products.
Tonia
The important part is reading the ingredients. A lot of dive shops sell “reef safe” as a brand. If you look at the ingredients it still has oxy in it. I have seen divers get kicked off scuba boats for using the wrong sunscreen. Thanks for be conscientious but be careful of ingredients

Stay home!
Brenda
Can't remember where I bought this but I believe it's reef friendly, only contains titanium dioxide & zinc oxide.

The Importance of Reef-Safe Sunscreen for Ocean Vacations
Planning an ocean vacation soon? Whether you're hitting the beach or planning a snorkeling or diving adventure, it's crucial to consider the impact of your sunscreen on the delicate marine ecosystem. Traditional sunscreens can contain harmful chemicals that contribute to coral bleaching and damage to other marine life.
What is Reef-Safe Sunscreen?
Reef-safe sunscreens, also known as coral-safe or ocean-friendly sunscreens, are formulated without ingredients that are known to be toxic to coral reefs and other marine organisms. These sunscreens are designed to provide effective sun protection while minimizing environmental impact.
Why Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen?
Coral reefs are vital ecosystems that support a vast array of marine life. However, they are facing serious threats from various factors, including pollution, climate change, and human activities. Certain chemical ingredients found in traditional sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been linked to coral bleaching and damage to other marine organisms.
By using reef-safe sunscreens, you can help protect these fragile ecosystems and enjoy your ocean vacation while minimizing your environmental impact.
Where to Buy Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Reef-safe sunscreens are becoming increasingly available in many retail stores and online platforms. Some popular brands that offer reef-safe options include:
- Stream2Sea
- Thinksport
- Badger
- All Good
- Raw Elements
Additionally, many outdoor and surf shops, as well as eco-friendly retailers, carry a selection of reef-safe sunscreen products.
When shopping for reef-safe sunscreen, look for products that are labeled as "reef-safe," "coral-safe," or "ocean-friendly." It's also a good idea to check the ingredient list and avoid sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other potentially harmful chemicals.
By making the switch to reef-safe sunscreen, you can enjoy your ocean vacation while contributing to the protection of our precious coral reefs and marine life.
