What Are the Best Resorts in Mexico for a Week-long Stay?

Question:

Profile picture of Tara

Tara

I’m thinking about taking the leap and going to Mexico for a week. There are so many resorts out there, what are some of the great ones you’ve been to and recommend?

Humans say...

We stayed at the Royal Decameron in Los Cabos. Enjoyed the resort. It is smaller and adult only. In walking distance to other bars and restaurants and San Jose and we took the bus to Cabo

Fiesta Americana in Puerto Vallarta

Profile picture of Sheryl

Sheryl

Christin we liked this resort, but found that the sun only hit the pool area around noon.

Profile picture of Christin

Christin

Sheryl i don’t recall the shade/sun being an issue there. All the PV resorts would be on that same coastline

Profile picture of Sheryl

Sheryl

We were there a few years ago there was 2 Fiesta Americana resorts. 1 was adult only. I just checked the one we were at is now Hotel Playa Fiesta. The problem was the resort building was tall and blocked sun until noon. Is is on the southern edge of PV

Christin

Sheryl yes that was the Grand Fiesta Americana

Paige That's where we're going next week (to the Ventus at Marina El Cid in Riviera Maya)!!! Any tips or recommendations? Also, what sort of COVID test did you do before leaving and did the hotel provide it? Any advice would be appreciated
Also glad to hear you loved it!!!

Profile picture of Paige

Paige

Deb covid test was a dam nightmare. But you will pay at the front desk when you check in. Go down to the building they tell you to go to during the week to book it. Keep you had written receipt they give you. They will book you for the day before your flight. We never got the email with the results and almost missed our flight. $125 usd per person. Pcr test. No option you need this to come back to canada
- bring mosquito repellent
- food and drinks are amazing
- go to the pool with the jump, if your looking for fun
- you really do not need to upgrade to anything
- it's such a beautiful resort , you will be amazed when you get there .

Aside from the test, this sounds amazing! We're very much looking forward to it and now I'm even more excited to go. Thanks so much for the reply

Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Great Moments in Puerto Vallarta. Sadly not adults only but its the best location in town. you'll need to be firm with the time share cons when checking in but when you do the resort is amazing.

Royal Decameron bucerias was the worst resort I’ve ever been too.
Where I’d go again
Grand Sirenis Mayan
Any Barcelo
Basically anywhere in huatulco
Fav place was actually dreams la Romano jn domincan. We did 2 weeks and could’ve stayed again.

Profile picture of Taunia

Taunia

Amanda I agree Royal Decameron was awful. we stayed there 2020 the location was great but that was about it. Food was so bad we went off site to eat. Room was old and in need of repair. Only draft beer and terrible vodka.

Profile picture of Amanda

Amanda

Taunia Yep! I was shocked how dirty it was. And to be honest if you’re going to spend money to travel go somewhere with a swimmable beach.

Profile picture of Taunia

Taunia

Amanda right! But I did love the proximity to Bucerias. We walked to town a couple times. Walked to the market. Had an amazing lunch under a palapa on the beach at Sukha oh man I can’t wait to go back to Mexico

Profile picture of Amanda

Amanda

Taunia I did a private riding tour (horse) which was amazing on the beach, sad when we went through the residential
ate at the seafood restaurant a couple times on the beach. But I wouldn’t stay at that resort again, ever. And I much prefer blue ocean.

Profile picture of Michelle

Michelle

Nancy it was clean, laid back and relaxed. We just loved tbe whole experience there

Profile picture of Sylvie

Sylvie

Nancy nice beach, food was ok, great location. Stayed at Secrets Huatulco also. Great hotel but beach is is steep and water is rough, unless you walk around the bay to the far end where it’s more calm. No dinner buffet, had to eat at the a la cart restaurants. Food was better than at Dreams. Would stay at Dreams over Secrets for the beach.

Profile picture of Nancy

Nancy

Sylvie we are going for the beach. I can hardly wait. Thanks

Nancy we also hired one of the locals that were walking on the beach selling boat rides to take us snorkelling for the day. $250cdn was so worth it

Jaclyn hello! Do you mind letting me know what is required (ie testing/vaccines) to get there and back? Hard to find the info I’m looking for and my son wants to visit his grandparents.

Profile picture of Jaclyn

You need to be double vax’d to fly now but you don’t need a pcr test to go to Mexico. There is a white tent outside the PV airport that does pcr testing for 1500 pesos/73 usd which you have to get within 72 of coming home. Thats it. It was easy!

- Grand Velas Puerto Vallarta (Great beach, spa, good food & location near PV - but $$)
- Excellence Playa Mujeres (great food & scores high overall. risk of sargasso )
- Secrets Akumal (amazing beach & snorkeling (when there’s no sargasso)
- Iberostar Playa Mita (beautiful quiet beach with best ocean & Mtn views, & lovely for long walks on the beach (but ocean can be a bit rough depending on time of year for swimming), amazing sunset views & whale watching from lounge, gorgeous grounds, great location to explore bucerias & sayulita & to do countless other off property excursions from cultural, to snorkeling, to hiking (My top pick for appealing to a wide variety of interests if you don’t want to just stay at the hotel as there’s so much to do in the area).
- Royalton Riviera Cancun (great food & nightlife)
- Secrets Playa Mujeres awesome daytime vibe & pools, good food, bonus is you can access dreams next door, not the best location other than fairly close to Cancun airport, not the best beach)
- Dreams Sapphire great rooms on the beach & swim out rooms (not great food), - Paradissus Cancun - elegant beautiful property, great nightlife & specialty restaurants, pool food & beach not the best (red flag ocean swimming (waves & sargasso).
These are my coles notes from wedding venue scouting. Anecdotally, I’ve also heard good things about the Fives & Occidental in Cancun.

Before you go, I suggest checking out the facebook pages of where you want to visit and see reviews of people who have been there recently. I belong to a few of the groups, and some of the resorts are really feeling the effects of Covid, with less than 1/2 the employees, the resorts are only 20% open, some of the restaurants are closed and no evening entertainment.

Girlie Domingo I’ve heard the beach here isn’t the best. Did you like the beach?

Profile picture of Gigi

Robin we loved it! There were no seaweeds when we were there. I guess it all depends on the time of the year that you're there.
Also when you stay at The Grand, you can use all the amenities of Sunrise and Nizuc including all the restaurants!

We were cruisers and hadn’t been to an AI in years. We got tired of waiting for cruising to reopen and tried Excellence Riviera Cancun in May/June. It was absolutely perfect!!!
This is our view from our swim up room.
Lots of daily activities, excellent nightly entertainment, 10 restaurants with no reservations required, lazy river, swim up bar, 6 pools but the resort is compact and you can walk everywhere within 5 minutes.
Food was incredible as were the service & drinks.
BEST vacation of our lives!!
We’re already booked to go back February 2022 and can’t wait!

Mexico Resort Recommendations for an Unforgettable Week

So, you're dreaming of a week in Mexico? Excellent choice! With stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and delicious food, Mexico offers a fantastic getaway. Choosing the right resort can make all the difference, and luckily, I've been to a few that I highly recommend. Let's dive into some options that cater to different tastes and budgets:

For the Luxury Traveler:

Grand Velas Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen):

If you're seeking pure opulence, the Grand Velas Riviera Maya delivers. This all-inclusive resort boasts stunning suites, gourmet dining experiences, a world-class spa, and impeccable service. Whether you're nestled in the jungle or beachfront, you'll be surrounded by luxury. Be prepared to spend a bit more, but it's worth it for a truly pampered experience.

For the Family Fun Seeker:

Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Esmeralda:

This family-friendly resort offers something for everyone. Kids will love the water park and kids' club, while adults can relax by the pool or indulge in the spa. Multiple restaurants offer diverse cuisine, and the spacious suites are perfect for families. The lively atmosphere and numerous activities make it a great choice for a memorable family vacation.

For the Romantic Escape:

Zoëtry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya (Puerto Morelos):

Seeking a tranquil and romantic getaway? Look no further than Zoëtry Paraiso de la Bonita. This boutique resort offers an intimate and luxurious experience. Enjoy personalized service, gourmet dining, and a serene atmosphere perfect for couples. Indulge in couples' massages, relax on the secluded beach, and savor intimate moments in a truly romantic setting.

For the Budget-Conscious Traveler:

Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya (Playa Paraíso):

While still offering an excellent all-inclusive experience, the Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya provides a more budget-friendly option. You'll still enjoy beautiful pools, comfortable rooms, various dining options, and access to a stunning beach. It's a fantastic way to experience Mexico's beauty without breaking the bank. Consider this a great value-for-money option.

Tips for Choosing Your Resort:

  • Consider your travel style: Are you looking for luxury, family fun, romance, or budget-friendly options?
  • Read reviews: See what other travelers have to say about the resorts you're considering.
  • Check for deals: Look for travel packages or promotions that can save you money.
  • Think about location: Do you want to be close to the action or prefer a more secluded setting?

No matter which resort you choose, I'm sure you'll have an incredible time in Mexico! Enjoy the sun, the beaches, and the vibrant culture!
