Question:

Anyone has been to Playa del Carmen just recently?
Is the sea weed so bad that you can't swim in the ocean?
Thanks

I was there 2 weeks ago for 6-7 days and everyday there's sargassum everywhere: starting from the PDC harbor till Sandos Playacar (last resort). Workers would try their very best to clear the beach but there's just too much. By the 6th day, we've decided to take the ferry to Cozumel for a day trip just because we wanted to swim in the ocean.

Yes it is true. And probably will be for quite some time. There are many months when it is worse than other but seems to be an ongoing issue for several years. We have been going there for the last 15 years and this isn’t the worst we have seen it but still pretty bad. Down towards tulum isn’t so bad though. It’s not so bad that you can’t swim in the ocean ANYWHERE there, just that depending on the day or location it might not be good right in front of your particular hotel. We always stay in condos and tend to book a few blocks from the beach just in case the sargassum is bad.

Its really bad and it is projected to get worse this year.
I follow a Facebook page called Viajefest. Its in Spanish but they have a lot of updates on this issue (as well as tons of suggestions for alternative places and sights).

We were there about a month ago and during our stay (7 days) only 3 last days the sea was awesome (no weeds and waves). All other days staff was working very hard to remove sea weeds but without visible results.

This photo was taken last week apparently. It breaks my heart because it's a beautiful beach and this problem is a big issue for the area.

Was there late March (public beaches) and I thought it was fine. There are areas with more but it’s not overwhelming.

We left March 4 and the bulldozer was working every day. We didn’t even walk on the beach, it was really dirty.

We were there until April 12 and it was gross. We never spent one day on the beach. They are trying to clear it but it smells so bad it’s hard to be around. There were people still sitting further up from the water, but honestly, it was awful.

Seaweed Situation in Playa del Carmen: A Recent Update

If you're planning a trip to the beautiful Playa del Carmen in Mexico, you might have heard rumors about the seaweed situation and its impact on the beaches. As someone who recently visited this stunning destination, I can share my firsthand experience and insights.

The Seaweed Situation

Yes, unfortunately, the seaweed situation in Playa del Carmen is quite significant at the moment. During my stay, I witnessed large amounts of sargassum (a type of brown seaweed) washing up on the shore, covering parts of the beach and accumulating in certain areas.

While the extent of the seaweed can vary from one beach to another, it is undoubtedly a concern for those seeking a pristine, seaweed-free beach experience. The seaweed can make it challenging to swim in some areas, as it can accumulate in the water, making it murky and less appealing.

Impact on Swimming

Despite the seaweed situation, it is still possible to swim in certain areas of the ocean. However, you may need to be more selective about where you enter the water. Some beaches have designated zones where the seaweed is less prevalent, allowing for a more enjoyable swimming experience.

Additionally, many hotels and resorts in Playa del Carmen have implemented measures to mitigate the seaweed problem. They employ teams to manually remove the seaweed from the beachfront areas and create seaweed-free zones for guests to enjoy the ocean.

Tips for Visitors

If you're planning to visit Playa del Carmen soon, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your beach experience:

  1. Do your research: Check with your hotel or resort about the current seaweed situation and their efforts to manage it.
  2. Be flexible: Be open to exploring different beaches or areas along the coastline to find the best spots for swimming and sunbathing.
  3. Consider alternative activities: While the seaweed may impact your beach time, Playa del Carmen offers plenty of other activities, such as exploring cenotes, visiting Mayan ruins, or enjoying the vibrant nightlife.

Remember, the seaweed situation is a natural phenomenon and can vary from season to season. While it may pose some challenges during your visit, Playa del Carmen remains a beautiful destination with plenty to offer beyond its beaches.

Embrace the experience, and don't let the seaweed deter you from enjoying the warmth, hospitality, and cultural richness of this Mexican paradise.
