When you have been planning a big trip all year, how far in advance do you start packing?

I take my suitcase out and lay it out in my spare room about a week ahead. I go through my shave kit (Or whatever anyone calls it these days) and see what I need to replenish because when I get home after a trip I just put it away. This gives me a week to throw things in it as I think of them and pick things up that I need as I remember them.

When i went to Europe for 2 weeks in August of 2016, I packed on the wednesday before I left on the Sunday. Make a list of all things you may require to bring then go from there. If its just you less then a week is more than enough. In Europe you don't need a ton of clothes because many places have laundry and packing light is best, in case you buy stuff, and that the going over the weight limit of baggage for the airline will cost you so watch that, so any where else not sure about. Like I said check the airline's baggage weight limit, which should be around 22KG or 50 LBS.

I start laying out my clothes 2 weeks before. It's usually way too much so then I can start removing items I can do without and make sure I have pieces that I can wear together and in more than one combination.

I pack months in advance because I usually travel with my kid. One thing I don't want to miss is all medications. I don't want to waste time going to a drugstore in another country so I ensure I have all the stuff I need to maintain my health abroad.

Months? I don't have enough clothing for that.

2 days ahead. Pack twice. First day, pack what you think you might need. Second day, unpack. Take half away. Repack what's left. You don't have to take most of what you own. There are stores if you forget something that you actually need.

When to Start Packing for a Big Trip

Planning a big trip can be both exciting and overwhelming. One of the key aspects of preparing for a trip is deciding when to start packing. The timing of when to start packing can vary depending on the individual, the length of the trip, and personal preferences. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when to start packing for your big trip.

Factors to Consider

Before deciding when to start packing for your big trip, consider the following factors:

  • Length of the trip: Longer trips may require more time for packing and preparation.
  • Destination: Consider the climate and activities at your destination to determine what items you will need to pack.
  • Packing style: Some people prefer to pack well in advance, while others may leave it until the last minute.

General Guidelines

Based on the factors above, here are some general guidelines for when to start packing for a big trip:

  • Short trips (1-3 days): Start packing a day or two before your trip.
  • Weekend getaways: Start packing a few days before your trip.
  • Week-long trips: Start packing 3-5 days before your trip.
  • Extended trips (2 weeks or more): Start packing a week or more before your trip.

Ultimately, the best time to start packing for your big trip is when you feel comfortable and prepared. Some people may prefer to pack well in advance to avoid last-minute stress, while others may enjoy the thrill of packing at the last minute. Find what works best for you and enjoy your trip!
