We were just in San Diego. 1st thing...book your PCR test through Curative...no charge and awesome service ( everyone else charges around $120 USD). Everything is open...and you only have to wear a mask if you want to ( not mandated). Zoo and Safari park are amazing!
Jigz
Cody good to know! I’ll be there in two weeks and was just wondering about testing. What location did you go to ?
Mairilee
Cody how long did it take you to get your results back? we will be on a cruise and on the Friday, our stop is San Deigo. We want to fly home Sunday when we disembark, so.... thinking we will find a place for testing through Curative that day in San Diego in hopes that our results will be back before our flight!
Karla
Mairilee if you do pcr testing for free result time varies. CVS/walgreens is taking 2 to 3 days. If you do through the county it is usually 24 hours.
I did NAAT testing through pure pharmacy, $150USD and results in an hour. I've also done the free PCR through them twice and had the results back next morning
Mairilee
Karla thank you! Feel like we are lucky to be in SAN that 2nd to last day as we were planning on renting a car anyways. The day prior to disembarking is in Mexico and I know nothing of that. Hoping to not have to shell out $150 USD each for testing, but? we shall see what happens that week!
Karla
Mairilee you can book at pure pharmacy in advance for the free one. I've just got stuck at the border waiting for the cvs results before. The Pure pharmacy one has been reliable!
Have fun, bit cool there compared to usual but still nicer than this!
Cody
Mairilee Also appears to have the quickest turn around with results...took less than 12 hours for all three (3) of us. Here is the easiest location: 8150 Mira Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92126
Mairilee
Cody thank you kindly!!
Pauline
Cody is this a walk in or drive thru?
Jigz
Cody is this walgreens or curative? Sorry to jump in but I’ll be in SD in two weeks n trying to get my ducks in order though I’m driving back to Calgary
Anne
Mairilee Hi Mairilee we were booked for a cruise on Royal in Jan that we had to cancel and they supplied the PCR test. Just saying in case ur cruise supplies it as well?
Mairilee
Jigna Gohil we are also from YYC, but will be flying!
Jigz
Mairilee thats awesome! I’m flying into San Francisco then driving down and across n back to calgary
Mairilee
Jigna Gohil We are wanting to do a one or two month road trip! I'm uber jelly you are headed there so soon!
Mairilee
Anne Can you clarify? You cancelled a cruise, but they mailed you a PCR test? or they cancelled it and they mailed? you a test? sorry I am not clear
Anne
Mairilee so sorry. When we were booked for the cruise the return pcr test was included in the cruise by them.
Mairilee
Anne well, that would be amazing. I will check and see. We got a package of the free antigen tests they were giving out a while back. They are good until 2023, so... if I don't need to use them prior to going, I'm taking them with so I can test myself (more for my own pre knowledge, need to book hotel for quarantine etc... than anything)
Cody
Walk in
Shauna
Cody I've heard to provide hotel address and say no to insurance to get the test for free, is this right?
Pauline
Cody Thank you so much
Mairilee
Shauna we did that in Vegas in Dec.
Cody
Shauna Correct, you still have to show your canadian ID but there is no issue with the local hotel address and your home address.
Tara
we were there at Christmas, stayed in Carlsbad, did the hop on hop off bus, went to the USS midway, toured around seaport and did the segway tour that is attached to the Embassy Suites Hotel. I have also stayed there as well - location is perfect! Also toured old town and Gaslamp Alley. We booked our PCR before leaving Canada at the CVS in Oceanside. Went to the drive through window and had results in 40 hours at no cost for 5 of us.
Natasha
Tara was there a website you booked this through?

We did USS Midway and the Safari Park - both very worthwhile. FYI even though the safari park is not far from San Diego, being inland it was about 20 degrees hotter than San Diego so if you have little kids, pick a cooler day to go. The Fort Rosecranz Cemetary in San Diego is beautiful and incredibly impactful - overlooking the bay, with military crosses as far as you can see.
Janice
Must eat at Phil’s BBQ. If there’s a line wait it goes fairly fast and you won’t be disappointed
Joan
Walking along the harbour path. Gorgeous views, lovely shops, restaurants. We got a free PCR test at Walgreen's. Arrived in 24 hours. You can book them online from Canada within 7 days.
Pauline
Joan we won’t have a vehicle and Walgreens is drive thru only, correct?
Joan
A lot of people in your situation use uber or take a cab. You can check to see if you can just walk to the window on your own too. I'd book an appointment and then check it out when you get there. We were within walking distance to a Walgreen's from our hotel.
Christy
We stayed in mission beach. One of my favourite places. I could sit and watch crazy people all day! Great food around.
Christy
Denny unfortunately I don’t. We stayed is a private residence. And once in a hotel. But I’m not sure if the name now.
Denny
Christy - thanks for replying
Katie
Christy would you recommend mission beach if we have two little kids? Or should we stay somewhere quieter?
Christy
Katie yes the beaches are similar. This one has interesting people but still family friendly.
Katie
Christy thank you! I'm planning a trip there for next April with my family. PM me with any and all suggestions
Christy
Katie it’s been years since we took the kids. We went to La Jolla to see the seals.
Kevin
All Walgreens pharmacys in The US do covid testing for free. You need either the PCR or the IDNOW test. Check their website here and you have to book 3 days in advance. https://www.walgreens.com/findcare/covid19/testing?ext=gooFY22_COVID+Testing_Brand_ExactCOVID_Brand_COVID+Testing_Exact_walgreens%20covid%20testing&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhNOpyeHh9QIVmz2tBh3JxgzBEAAYASAAEgKpSvD_BwE

San Diego Travel Diaries: Everything You Need to Know
San Diego, the sun-kissed city by the Pacific, has always been a popular travel destination for its year-round pleasant weather, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture. And with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, many travelers have been flocking to this Southern California gem. If you've recently visited San Diego or are planning a trip soon, here's what you need to know.
Accommodations and Must-Visit Spots
One of the best parts about visiting San Diego is the abundance of accommodation options, ranging from luxurious resorts to cozy vacation rentals. Many travelers opt to stay in the heart of downtown, close to the iconic Gaslamp Quarter, where you can find a plethora of restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.
As for must-visit spots, the list is endless. The world-famous San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are an absolute must for families and nature lovers. If you're a beach enthusiast, La Jolla Cove and Coronado Beach are renowned for their stunning coastlines and picturesque surroundings.
Reopening Status and Safety Measures
The good news is that San Diego has reopened its doors to visitors, with most restaurants, attractions, and businesses operating at full capacity. However, it's essential to keep in mind that safety measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing may vary across venues. It's always a good idea to check the local guidelines and regulations before planning your trip.
PCR Testing for Returning to Canada
If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident traveling back home from San Diego, you'll need to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result. Several testing facilities in San Diego offer PCR testing services, with turnaround times ranging from 24 to 72 hours. One popular option is the San Diego County COVID-19 testing sites, which offer free PCR testing with results typically available within 48 hours.
Alternatively, you can opt for private testing facilities like CVS or Walgreens, which offer rapid PCR testing for a fee (typically around $100-$150 USD). It's advisable to schedule your test a few days before your departure to ensure you receive the results on time.
No matter where you decide to get tested, remember to factor in the cost and timing of the PCR test when planning your trip. Safe travels, and enjoy the sun-drenched beauty of San Diego!
