Help! Trying to decide between Bucerias, La Cruz, Punta de Mita or Sayulita in Feb/Mar. Husband and I are looking for some guided surfing (advanced beginner), a safe beach and a pool for the 4 year old and walking distance to most things. Any suggestions are welcomed.

No surfing in Bucerias, have you looked into San Poncho ? It’s north of Bucerias and usually has a lot of surfing action

We stayed by Punta de Mira in Oct. In my opinion, if you are looking for surfing, Sayulita would be the best choice. It was also a cool town.

Sayulitas is the only really good place for surfing . Beach is ok too . Just very Americanized . Lots of places to eat tho . Will not be cheap and a long drive from airport. If u don’t want to rent a car make sure resort has transport to and from airport

Sayulita.im not a surfer so I can’t speak to that aspect but Sayulita is gorgeous and it checks all the other boxes for sure

If you're into all inclusive's the Grand Palladium beach had many local surfers on the beach. It's not walking distance to anything in town (Punta Mita) though and the resort is nothing fancy.

Sayulita is good for surfing but it’s a party town and can be VERY loud at night.
The beach is not amazing for little kids as the surf can be very strong but if you have a good place with a pool then maybe the beach can be more for playing than swimming.

Just got back from Sayulita. LOVED it. There are areas for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfing, and lots of folks willing to teach/coach. Highly recommend Maui - he's a bit further down the beach (just north of where the "river" drains into the bay. But well worth the walk down - as he is excellent at communicating and helping you start and improve. As for hotels - we stayed at the Phoenix - a ways to the north - still walking distance. But pool was too cold for my kids. Like hose water cold. So don't recommend for that reason. But it was quiet at night for most of the area up in that vicinity. I agree with other statements about the surf - depending on kids ages and swimming skills - it can be quite rough.

Puerto Escondido is known for surfing.

Punta Mita is lovely but I don’t think you would be happy enough with Surf.

Sayulita for sure. We stayed in a condo complex with a pool about a 8-10 min walk from center of town/ 5 min walk to beach and it was perfect. Not noisy at all as mostly families and older couples. We had a kitchen to cook and just went out when we wanted to eat. I can send you the airbnb listing if interested.

Sayulita is probably the best option. Playa de los Muertos is a five-minute walk from town and generally safe for swimming... if not especially beautiful. I was last there in Jan 2018 and Sayulita Sickness was very much still a thing, though... worth checking if its truly resolved.

Sayulita hands down. Dont rent a car, just take a cab to where you are staying.
Rent a house, use this website it's cheaper than airbnb or VRBO.
Then everything is pretty much walkable but you can also rent an electric golf cart if you feel the need.
Lots of great eats and super safe.
PS sayulita sickness is a thing of the past.
New water treatment facility last year so no more raw sewage being pumped into the bay.

Be careful about Sayulita - check the state of their wastewater treatment facilities. We were there a year ago and all of us got super sick because they were spewing raw sewage right I to the ocean by the surf break.

Sayalita has best surfing , however check the status of water before you go! We got very very sick there last spring and later found out it was the only beach in Mexico that was not safe for swimming! They were dumping raw sewage into water where the surfing is.

I am also trying to decide on where to go in this area. Looking for 3 bedroom place for 5 adults with pool (small is okay), walking distance to a nice beach, shops, restaurants. Not going to be surfing though. Like Mexican charm/decor and doesn't have to be fancy but safe, comfortable and clean. Any recommendations?

Deciding Between Bucerias, La Cruz, Punta de Mita, or Sayulita for a Family Surf Vacation

If you're looking for a family-friendly surf destination in Mexico during February/March, you can't go wrong with any of the options you've listed. However, each location has its own unique charm and offerings, so let's break them down to help you make the best decision.

Bucerias

Bucerias is a charming little town located just north of Puerto Vallarta. It offers a laid-back vibe and a beautiful stretch of beach that's perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers. The waves here are generally gentle and consistent, making it an ideal spot for guided surfing lessons. Additionally, Bucerias is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and a bustling town square within walking distance.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

La Cruz is a vibrant fishing village situated just a short drive from Puerto Vallarta. While it may not be as well-known as the other destinations, it boasts a beautiful beach and a charming town center. The surf here is suitable for beginners and advanced beginners, with several surf schools offering lessons. La Cruz also has a marina, which adds to its unique character and offers opportunities for other water activities.

Punta de Mita

Punta de Mita is a luxurious resort area known for its high-end hotels and pristine beaches. It's located a bit further north from Puerto Vallarta but offers a more upscale experience. The surf here can be more challenging, with bigger waves suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. However, there are still plenty of beginner-friendly spots and surf schools offering lessons. Punta de Mita also has a variety of kid-friendly activities, including pools, beach clubs, and family-friendly restaurants.

Sayulita

Sayulita is a bohemian surf town that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It offers a laidback, hippie vibe and a vibrant surf culture. The waves here are suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced surfers, and there are plenty of surf schools to choose from. Sayulita also has a charming town center with shops, restaurants, and a beautiful plaza, all within walking distance. However, it can get quite crowded during peak season.

Considering your requirements of guided surfing for advanced beginners, a safe beach, a pool for your 4-year-old, and walking distance to amenities, any of these destinations could work well. Bucerias and Sayulita might be the best options, as they offer a good balance of surf, family-friendly activities, and walkable town centers. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preferences and the vibe you're looking for during your vacation.
