Refundable & open ended tickets are very expensive. Likely to cost a minimum of $2,000.
Depending on where you're going, you may want to look at one way flights on icelandair or westjet. 2 airlines that have reasonable one way prices between Europe and North America.
example: Edmonton to London for $353 after tax.

Then keep an eye on the one way flights coming home, closer to your return date.

For your best rate and open end tickets I would go to travel cuts. They tend to have the best contracts direct with the airlines. Generally they are one year open ended. One of the issues is flights can be sold out if you need to return during a busy season.

You can always change a return ticket directly with the airline. You will incur a change fee anywhere from 150-300 plus any increase in fare to fly in your preferred return date. If the day you want to fly back is cheaper than the initial ticket then your only fee is the change fee. No need for any travel agent especially if they are charging you for the service.
