Were you trying to withdraw too much money? My VanCity debit card did not work (or so I thought) in Spain a few years ago, and then I discovered that I had a withdrawal limit of $400 a day and was trying to take out too much money. That said, my TD/Canada Trust card worked in tiny villages all over eastern Europe.

Individual banks place limits as well as your parent bank. It sometimes won't tell you that is why it won't transact so you just think your card won't work there. Some Banks/countries won't allow any more than a 4 digit password some must have more than 4 digits. Also the charges per transaction can vary greatly.

I was able to take out money from ATM's in Turkey with my vancity debit card without problems.

I had the same problem as Patty ( trying to withdraw too much) in Vietnam but once I had that sussed I had no more problems!
Michelle
my limit is $500 on both my cards, using only a 4 digit pin. bottom line, Vancity NG while Bank of Montreal worked every time.

i found I just had to let my bank know before I went and my cards worked fine

My Experience with Van City Debit Card in Turkey
Just back from Turkey, City of Sultans was an awesome tour company if anyone is looking. FYI- before I left I put it out there about getting money from ATMs over there particularly using my Van City debit card. The reason I was concerned was because my VC debit card proved to be useless in India. Luckily I travel with 2 different cards. Anyway, Van City assured me that it would be no problem, no one out in YVR Dealsland had anything to add so I went once again hoping for the best but expecting the same poor outcome from the past. Sure enough- Vancity cards do not work, not even in the HSBC ATMs as Van City said they would. So, be prepared, you heard it here first. VanCity not worth counting on for ATM service in Turkey. Travel safe out there!
