Make sure you stay in the historical district of Rome. So many things to do, all walking distance. I'd highly recommend the Amalfi Coast as well. One of our favourite spots in Italy. Positano and Ravello shouldn't be missed. Rick Steves books are decent travel guides.

I too recommend the Rick Steves book, as well as his website where you can find audio guides to download for free rather than renting them on-site. One of the sights we really enjoyed in Florence was the Medici Chapel, with their tombs...amazing! Be sure to have gelato at Perché No! in Florence. We prebooked all of our museum visits on each museum's website. We also booked our train tickets here in Canada with RailEurope. If you're flexible about destinations, we stayed in Salerno (south of Naples) & enjoyed the ocean as well as using it as our jumping-off point to see Pompeii & Paestum. Both were well worth it! Cinque Terre is the most beautiful place we saw in Italy, absolutely breathtaking experience!

Check for city passes. We got one when we were in Rome and it allowed us to skip the lines and have pre-paid admissions.
Rebecca
And we REALLY regret not seeing Cinque Terre while we were there.
Amanda
Rebecca was it the Roma Pass that you got?
Rebecca
Yes it was.
